Exercise While Pregnant

The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists continue to emphasize the importance of exercise in thier most recent edition of the definitive guide to pregnancy, "Your Pregnancy & Birth".

ACOG continues its trend of promoting exercise among women before, during and after pregnancy. Although in previous decades doctors restricted the amount and type of exercise by pregnant women, today the emphasis is on promoting exercise during pregnancy, so long as certain precautions are followed.

"If you are active now, pregnancy need not cause you to alter your fitness routine," the ACOG book advises. "If you have not been active, now is a good time to start."

Special charts show the amount of calories burned by type of exercise, and a DOs and DON'Ts guide to exercise during pregnancy distills ACOG's basic recommendations. Illustrations of specific exercises help pregnant women maintain a healthy back and prevent some of the aches and pains of pregnancy.

Strength Fitness Has the Expertise You Need

At Strength Fitness we are committed to providing a clean, safe environment for everyone to workout. But for the pregnant client we have some special resources. Kim Balint who teaches our Yoga Fit program and Teresa Biles, who teaches Cardio Kickboxing and Boot Camp are both childbirth educators. Kim is also a lactation consultant and certified in prenatal yoga. These two instructors can help answers your questions about exercising safely during your pregnancy.

A communication issue:
When speaking with your physician about exercising (and we always recommend this) many of them don't know about cardio kickboxing and they get it confused with Muay Tai kickboxing. In Muay Tai the participants spar or fight each other and there is risk of abdominal trauma. Please stress to your physician that Cardio Kickboxing involves no contact with each other and therefore eliminates this abdominal trauma risk.
